The internet was a project in the Cold War; it was to produce a communications network that would be immune to a nuclear attack. In 1969, US created ARPANET – ARPANET was before the internet, it was a project of the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) in the Federal Government’s Department of Defence; ARPANET allowed the government and research institutions to share information.
New connections were soon added to the network, ‘links’;
-
23 in 1971
-
111 in 1977
-
Almost 4-million in 1994
The network’s size got large and so did its capabilities; within the first 25yrs, the internet added more features – file transfer, email, Usenet news and eventually HTML.
